Voluntary Self-Identification

All students in the OCDSB receive a copy of the First Nation, Métis, and Inuit Voluntary Self-Identification brochure , offering all families an equitable opportunity to self-identify .

Why self-identification?

In 2007, the Ontario Ministry of Education outlined their commitment to deliver quality education to First Nation, Métis, and Inuit students through their First Nation, Métis, and Inuit Education Policy Framework .

Why is the OCDSB asking me to self-identify?

The OCDSB is committed to providing equitable, inclusive, and engaging educational opportunities for all of our students, including our First Nation, Métis, and Inuit students. Our two main areas of focus are:

- to increase academic achievement for First Nation, Métis, and Inuit students, and
- to close achievement gaps between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students.

In order to know if we are being successful, we need to know who our First Nation, Métis, and Inuit students are in order to provide programming, services, and support that best address their needs.
